  7.     Like a bear, tough guy Norman Mailer is dangerous when
  8. wounded. After his hefty novel Harlot's Ghost received a
  9. painfully mixed review from John Simon in the New York Times
  10. Book Review, an aggrieved Mailer fought back. He gathered
  11. "evidence" of Simon's bias against him, threw his weight around
  12. in a meeting with the Times last week, and finally persuaded the
  13. editors to give "prominent play" to a lengthy rebuttal in the
  14. Nov. 17 edition, a rare occurrence. "He has a very thin skin,"
  15. jabs Simon, but Mailer disagrees. "I'm very thick-skinned about
  16. reviews. I don't normally go around complaining," he says. "But
  17. this is a special case."
